Theatre Based on a
15th century legend from Mali in West Africa, SUNDIATA is
the story of a young boy, Djata, who must learn
responsibility and loyalty in order to free his homeland
from the oppressive sorcerer-king, Sumanguru. Exiled as a
baby, Djata lives with his mother Nana in a hostile land. He
behaves badly, has trouble speaking, and walks only with
crutches. One day Djata meets a traveling peddler who
recognizes Djata as the rightful heir to the throne. She
helps Djata discover his strength and the soul of his
heritage so that he can return to his land and overthrow the
king. Using a traditional storytelling technique, SUNDIATA
opens a door on a little-remembered golden age of African
history. Read the Dispatch
