In 1983, in cooperation with the Columbus Public Schools,
CCT embarked on a remarkable new program called the
CHILD WRITING PROJECT. Students throughout the
school system were encouraged to write scripts, songs or
poems and submit them to
CCT. Teachers were enthused!
The idea proved to be an excellent vehicle to stimulate
writing. Dozens of entries were received, screened, and
some 30 pieces were selected. Props and costumes were
added, sets built, the pieces were professionally produced.
The
results were astounding. Teachers and administrators were thrilled by the
project. Their students had enthusiastically
seized the idea, had enjoyed writing pieces for the project, and got to
see the visible results of their work! The Child Writing Project has
become an annual activity of
CCT's Touring Company. In 1999, the 16th Annual
Child Writing Project, "Imagine That!," received over 1,000 entries from
students all over the state of Ohio.
The Child Writing Project has proven to be a
successful, hands-on, interactive program which has impacted thousands
upon thousands of children over the past fourteen years.
By working directly with teachers and administrators in elementary and
middle schools the project not only encourages and stimulates the writing
process in young people, it provides needed exposure to live theatre.
The project not only serves as a stimulus for teachers
to encourage writing within the schools, it serves as a vivid
demonstration for teachers and students of the process "from the written
page to the stage." It is a fertile activity for the young creative mind
and is a
very successful means of not only stimulating the writing process in
schools, but of exposing thousands of
children to live theatre each year.
CCT is proud to offer this rewarding
celebration of the young creative mind.
The 2009 Child Writing Project is supported in part through a generous grant from
HONDA of America Mfg., Inc. For more information on how to participate, or to
